4 out of 5 stars Demanding but rewarding game   January 5, 2009
Overall, I enjoy this game a bunch, especially being able to play on my feet. It is deep with tons of things to unlock. All you need to do is learn how to play, which can be problematic. In general, there are three playing modes: PangYa Fest and Match mode (which puts you against the computer and leads to the unlocking of items and players) and Versus mode (multiple player). While frustrating, the game does allow you to change where you want to progress with the game, allowing to go back to a harder portion later.

As others have noted, the swing mechanics are a little funny because your power is not determined by your swing's power, but rather by where you have the club at the end of your backswing (with a press of the A button). The forward swing determines the accuracy of your shot and that can be trying. Luckily, you can have as many practice shots (pressing B instead of A) as you want before taking a real swing in a game. It can take a while to figure it out, but it can be learned and once you get over that hurdle, the game is definitely fun. Some mention putting being hard and not being able to read the green. I think this game makes reading the green possible, though it is hard at times. It takes practice, but it can be learned.

The other negative point of the game, sometimes it seems that the deck is stacked against you in some of the match or PangYa events. Your opponents may just be incredibly talented, hitting a ball within 10 feet of a pin from 210 yards out... in a bunker... with one hand tied behind their back (alright the last part was an exaggeration). Another case would be the computer's ability to sink chip shots or very long putts (60 to 100 feet) ending any chance of you taking the hole with a birdie. Worse yet, they'll get Pang points for the long putt or chip-in, leaving you with a deficit in Pang for a tiebreaker, despite shooting perfectly yourself.

This will be frustrating because you can be playing near perfect, but make one mistake and the game will beat you despite the computer making a ton of mistakes, but still getting the birdie or eagle. But in the same breath, your opponents will eventually make a critical error, allowing you a victory after three or four tries at the event. So about 8 of one and 4 of the latter. And while this can be frustrating, the game is certainly demanding you to play well, which means you'll need to play the wind properly, read greens better, etc... i.e. get real good at the game. It is a nice change of pace from older golf games where 25 under par is possible.

The game is cartoonish, and not the pinnacle of real world golf simulations. However, the game can be and is fun, if you like this sort of game. And if you do like this game, there is almost an unlimited amount of playing available, unlike a ton of other games.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for "non-golfers"   October 3, 2008
We rented this game and had alot of fun playing it so we decided to buy. The seller shipped quickly and game was in condition as described. I've seen reviews from people that actually golf and they didn't like it as much as the Tiger Woods game. We rented both games prior to purchasing and as non-golfer's we found Super Swing to be alot more fun; we didn't need a totally realistic golf game.

3 out of 5 stars Great game, but completely irrelevant thanks to the sequel   September 28, 2008
Super Swing Golf is an entertaining game, to be sure, and when it first came out, it might have been a great idea to buy it to get a golf fix on the Wii (assuming you had enough of the holes in Wii Sports).

However, Tecmo did something very few companies do - they made a sequel that includes all the content from the original.

Most sequels have lots of all-new stages and characters and such, with maybe a handful brought back from a past game, but in Super Swing Golf Season 2, you get everything the original game had, and then some, making this first game in the series entirely irrelevant.

There's really no reason to own this one once you have the sequel, unless you're one of those nutty completionists who has to own every game in a series just for the sake of owning it.

5 out of 5 stars For the Persnickety Player Who Needs a Challenge   May 27, 2008
Most of the other reviews here have given this game a fair shake-down. Yes, the storyline is cheesy, the characters are cutesy, the game-play is slow, and the controls take a lot of practice, BUT, all of this aside, and perhaps even partially because of these quirks, this game still gets 5 stars in my book for the seemingly endless challenge it provides. This is probably the most addicting game I have ever played (rivaled only by Pokemon). I have no idea how many hours I have put into this thing, but it has become a deeply entrenched desire of mine to finish what I started! I actually feel quite accomplished to have made it as far as I have; I have been playing this game on and off for about a year now and I am probably only 65% through it. The day I beat the darn thing, I'm throwing a party!

Starting the game is tedious. You will be terrible at it. Putting will be absolutely, unreasonably confounding. The controls will seem clunky. But for some reason, at least if you are anything like me, you will just keep playing and playing and playing this game and slowly, you will actually start to improve. Of course, as you improve, so will your opponents, so the intense challenge will continue, but at least you will know what you are doing more. Consistently, it takes many attempts to beat the computer opponents, but this makes every win and gain that much more satisfying. Plus, once you get playing with friends in multi-player mode, they will actually look at you in awe, for being able to putt accurately, chip the ball in now and again, and make so much bonus money with each shot! If you're a bit competitive, this makes all the practice worth it.

Bottom line? If you are exceedingly patient, like a serious and seemingly endless challenge, enjoy indulging in endearingly cheesy story-lines, like shopping for clothes and items, and enjoy a bit of tedium, then this game is for you. If you are not possessed of such a particular demeanor, you might be better served to look for a different game, as this one will probably be incredibly frustrating for you.

3 out of 5 stars Great game, but why not buy the sequal?   April 2, 2008
I gave this game 3 stars not because this is a bad game, but because you should buy a different game!

It's a great golf game. Currently Super Swing golf is the best golf series for the wii. I'm not a real golfer, and nor is my wife. For some reason, her favorite games are golf games. I don't understand it either, but I know that she loves this game.

But, don't buy this game. Super Swing Golf Season 2 has all the courses from this game and 2 more courses. This game costs $49.99 on Amazon. Super Swing Golf: Season 2 costs $39.99 from Amazon. You do the math. Super Swing Golf: Season 2 also lets you choose "lucky" clubs. This makes the game a ton easier for beginners.

Pros:
-fun golf game! Slightly wacky, but the golf itself is very consistent and fun.
-good motion controls without overdoing it

Cons:
-2nd game has all this and more
-2nd game starts you with "lucky" clubs that make the game easier when you start out (have to choose them but they're there)
-"risky" costumes. If I want t&a, I'll buy leisure suit larry. Why does this game need this? I probably will buy "We Love Golf" when it comes out just to have a game I can let my kids play!
