Good concept, bad implementation October 24, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is the worst Wii game we've purchased. In short, it was sent to the market well before it was finished. The graphics are horrible, the characters have still bodies with bobble-heads, the "girl" characters look like boys with [...], and a couple of the kids are freaky-looking. They did use Foxworthy's voice, but don't expect any of his comments from the show. The other characters comments are limited and often unrelated to the actual action. The controls are even worse and do not use even the basic Wii actions. In single player mode, the pointer lacks accuracy. In multiplayer mode (2-4 players), the game actually only uses 1 controller which you have to pass around between the players (that's right - 1 controller!), and the pointer on that controller is not used at all. Instead, you use the arrows to pick your answers. I have no idea how the designers handle the controller issue in timed dual player mode - we gave up before we got there. As slow as gameplay moves I'm not sure you can keep kids interested in this for long, adn the adults were tired of it in 30 minutes. This game was only mildly amusing because we love guessing answers along with the show, and the format of the video game follows the TV show format. Save your money on this one!
Truly Smarter Than A 5th Grader October 21, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Arguably, when it comes down to the mega-money game shows, this past year we've finally seen a lot of them after these past few years break the bank. Last month, after 3 years, a contestant on Deal Or No Deal had finally won $1 million. The Price Is Right with Drew Carey had 3 $1 million winners, and hard to believe, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? on the season premire on Fox, a superintendent from Georgia proved she was smarter than a 5th grader, and won the top prize. But with these great game shows coming to the Wii, there is the real gambe of seeing which one is actually going to shine the brightest. While, we've yet to see Deal Or No Deal as it is coming soon to the Wii, and The Price Is Right could've had more to offer in the way of excitement, it is time to see if Jeff Foxworthy is just as smart as a 5th Grader on the Wii.
Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?: Make The Grade for the Nintendo Wii, brings in the hit Fox game show with Jeff Foxworthy, and the excitement as well. The game features the hit game show, and the heart of it as well, as you challenge yourself to over 6,000 questions, that is more than recent computer editions of Jeopardy! and Family Feud combined. The game really breaks it down as you are questioned on subjects ranging from History and Mathematics, all the way to Science and Fitness from the 1st-5th Grades. While the graphics aren't as superior, the gameplay really tests your mind and soul like you're Kathy Cox, the first million dollar winner from the show. Aside from the main game, you also are challenged through a few different mini-games including a rapid fire spelling bee and a flashcard mode. The control is simple point and click, but the game really shows that it is more challenging than you could imagine.
All in all, while many game shows haven't really made the mark with delivering a definitive video game version, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? is really a great buy. I love watching the hit show on Fox at nights, and if you're a fan of the show or if you want to test your mind through the wringers of fun, than this would be the challenge for you. While many contestants haven't proven that they are smarter than a 5th Grader and said it on the show, I really recommend this as a great addition for the Wii. Then, if you pass the test, you too will be smarter than a 5th grader.
